The last class-Designing Finnish Metal Music

апокалиптика
Today's topic is about metal music in Finland. Before I listened this speech, I never know that metal music is a characteristic of Finland. And it also solve a problem I have for a long time that why I often see some teenagers wear in Punk style on the street.

In the speech, the speaker introduced several metal band rose from Finland. All of them have exactly different music style and their music also change my impression to metal music. The rhymes of these metal music is listenable and interesting.

But how to connect the metal music with design? The speaker used album cover and bands' logo and symbol as samples. Every metal music band had his own logo, recognition to present his own style and it needs graphic designer to help them express their spirit and style on the cover and logo. Besides, members' dress of bands also can connect with Fashion design (maybe some of them do not need). It are all the connection between Design and metal music.

Even I never enjoy in the yell and howl in metal music, after listening to the speech, I think it might be a way to release depression, boring and other negative moods of daily life in Finland. It's a little like my feeling to Finnish: having a constant daily life and people usually are very calm down, but inside of body is very crazy and wild. It is very like Japaneses that I known.

In order to get more familiar with metal music, I also search some information on web. Surprisingly, there is a metal music band called "CHTHONIC" in Taiwan that I have never heard. The style and characteristic are totally different from Finnish metal music band.

Discussion of critical design poster

In the beginning, we listen to your advice that make more than one artifact to compare the different situation between Finland and Asian countries, but we think that make a new artifact for both areas can not emphasize the contract, so we decide put the stuffs used in the strike to show the different situations.
But we think that it might be offence to people of some Asian country without these unfair event, like Japan after finish version 1.
So we make another poster with flow to describe the situation of civil movement in Finland and other Asian countries without labeling which country it is.
After asking some friends' opinions, we found that not everyone can easily understand what we want to describe if we only use black and white, so we make another color version. And the flowchart is too simple and single to describe about civil movement.

In this version, we decide to add colors of national flag as a metaphor of Finland and Asian countries, and we use more stuffs using during the demonstration or strike to show the total different situation of civil movement between Finland and Asian countries.

After several times of discussion, we think that if we can use the same stuff but different usage in Finland and Asian countries, this kind of contrast will be much stronger than before. So merge all the information we collected from internet, friends' feedback, we final made the last version of poster. (attachment is the size in 1400*2000)

The tenth class-Design and Contemporary Finnish Lifestyles

Today's lecture is talking about Design and contemporary Finnish lifestyles. I like the speaker's viewpoint about definition of lifestyle. For example, the speaker gave a question: "what give you identity?" and explained clearly. However, I'm not sure whereas 30 interviews are enough as samples to present whole Finnish, especially she made interview only in Helsinki which is only one city of Finland, besides, I think Helsinki is a more modern city compared with other Finnish city that the speech should change to Helsinki lifestyle.

Besides, I want to talk about my impression of Finnish. Finnish style is very different from Taiwanese style. Although I stay in Finland only 4 month, I found that Finnish usually clam and cold when I first glanced, but after getting much familiar with Finnish classmate, I think they are very kind and warming to foreigners. In additions, sauna can be another specific characteristic of Finnish. I find that I can find sauna anywhere in Finland, and the most impressive is that Student union of Aalto University made a sauna van for their love to sauna. Compared with those famous design stuff, I think sauna is more presented to Finland lifestyle.

The ninth class-Ideological turns in Finnish design

Today's lecture is about the ideological turns in Finnish design. For me, it is also another history of design but it focus on the development from the national romanticism into modernism and others categories that came next to the development.Except the past of design history, the speaker also mentioned the next stage for design, such as service design and collaborative design.

Especially her views on service design and collaborative design fields. I guess the problem is that often people show a slide with people in a dim lit room full of post its and say “this is service design”. I believe this is a misperception  of what service design is about. The value that service design creates through strategically improving the user experience can be just as visually pleasing and appealing as any furniture.

I guess those of us that view themselves as service designers have a big job to do in creating a more engaging presentation of why we are important and why designing experiences and services are truly inspiring.
